Production week 1-4

Week 1- For this week I have started editing the pictures for the front cover and double page spread first i used the levels tool so that I could get the right lighting effect to show the difference between good and bad side of the person. To make it more effective I used the saturation tool to take colour out to give it more of a depressing look and added more saturation to add the effect of being more lively. I used the drop shadow effect so that the pictures look like they stand out. One problem I had while doing this was when I was erasing the background because some of the models hair is in strands at one side so the old background didn't blend in with the new gradient background I will fix this using the clone stamp tool so that the hair looks more naturally in place I will have to free transform the hair first in place because it sticks out to the side. Another problem is that there was a white line that appeared around the person when i was trying to overlay the two images i will have to use a the eraser tool to get rid of the white line or go around it with the lasso tool then feather it. I had trouble installing the fonts to Photoshop because I would need to reinstall them each time i opened Photoshop.

Week 2- I  end up using a different picture for the front cover and double page spread because it was too much hassle to change everything. I used the same picture for both front cover and DPS so that they both linked with each other. I used the colour adjustment tool to darken most of the colours for the front cover to give connotations of the content being serious. I also decided to make the models head overlap the masthead so i had to crop out the top of her hood and place it over the masthead layer. I started adding the sell line boxes and text. I added a drop shadow to the boxes and multi- selected the box and text layer to check they where at the same angle when I tilted them. Next I used started on the DPS image first I took the old image and pasted it on a A3 sized canvas because it is a close size to a DPS. I adjusted the hue and saturation and took away most of the colour of her face to have it a gray and almost colourless this also adds connotations of depression and sadness gray and dead. I added a light gray gradient background with added spots from an over sized brush and then added a transparent gray layer over the picture of the model.

Week 3- This week I have started using InDesign I started to watch tutorials on how to place images, how to start a document with the right number of columns and size of them, how to place text boxes, and how to add a drop caps.  and I placed the DPS picture I did on Photoshop onto InDesign as the background. I found the guide lines very use full because it was much easier to place the text boxes on to the page. I typed up my article and then changed the size so that it could fit in to the article columns and also added the drop caps. It didn't help that InDesign kept on crashing so I had to repeat some of the work did. I went back onto Photoshop to add some graphics such as the danger signs. I also added a yellow colour under the masthead layer because the font didn't have a solid colour and meaning that it didn't stand out when you looked at it. I also added the bar code with the price on the bottom right.

Week 4- I placed the Front cover onto the InDesign document but it came out blurred and this was because i saved it as a PNG instead of a high quality JPEG so I did that and the same for any other graphics that where on the DPS such as the background. I added the page numbers and "Article" subtitle at the top left of the magazine page.

3rd person narrative

He was out last night with him and he looked like he was a little bit tipsy even before he got out of the house. 2 hours later there was that really annoying guy that was starting on him and we were like "He is going to get beaten up" You started beating that guy up and he wasn't looking well at all, but it was funny so its okay. After that he went to her house and you had to carry him because he is so lazy. The worst part was the she was sick on his new shoes. It was really annoying.

1st and 2nd person about drinking with Tom

I wher out with the lads last night in town and we were buzzin couldn't wait to get fuckin smashed. 2 hours later there was this cunt right starting on Tom and we was like wtf that prick is gunna get it. Tom started goin at him, that guy was the shit beaten outa him fuckin LOL but ya know its all just good old banter. After I went to Johns house with Tom coz I had to carry him, the lazy shit. Worst part John he was sick on my new shoes. I'll kill him.

You where out last night with Tom and you guys looked like you where a little bit tipsy even before you got out of the house. 2 hours later there was that really annoying guy that was starting on you and we were like "He is going to get twated" You started beating that guy up and he wasn't looking well at all, but it was funny so its okay. After that you went to Johns house and you had to carry Tom because he is so lazy. The worst part was the John was sick on your new shoes. Silly John.

Shock/Question introduction types

Teen binge drinking can harm brains within months and turn social drinkers into alcohol abusers.
This is an example of a shock/horror introduction and they are used to scare the reader and might persuade them to read further to stop this happening to them.

What Is Binge Drinking? What Are the Risks Associated with Binge Drinking?
This is an example of a question introduction this causes an enigma making the reader curious and want to read more of the article or magazine to find out the answer to the question given.

Load selection.

This is how to use the load selection tool. There are different ways you can do it the easiest way to select a difficult shape or custom text is to press CTRL and click on the layer icon and it selects all the lines on that layer.

Another way is to use the rectangle marquee tool which makes a rectangle shape around the area you want.

You can also use the lasso tool to select around the area free handed by using a mouse or tablet.

I also found this easy to use because I have used it so many times in Graphics and at home.

Composition photos

This photo is an open framed long-shot which adds connotations of loneliness and isolation
This photo shows aperture control where the foreground is blured and the background is focused on something more important
This shot is an example of a closed frame, downward tilt, medium shot which adds connotations of the person being enclosed and sinister.
This shot is an example of a upward tilt shot. This have connotations of the house being demonic or hopeful.

This is a close up shot where you focus on one point it can show something in more detail or more emotion.

Shutter speed examples

This is an example of using shutter speed to extend the time to capture the image so that the time is long enough to draw shapes. It's most effective depending on what you are drawing or writing because if its a shape like a square it would only take you about 4 seconds to make the image where as if you where to wright someones name it would take about 15-30 seconds.
Some of the pictures where not effective because there was light comeing from the background such as the blinds in the back and works better in the dark.

I also learned about using the ISO setting to get a brighter photo. If it the photo is taken in a dim lighting you can get more light going through the lens by putting the ISO setting on 800, it's usually on 400 and that is for photos outside and in well lit rooms.

Vamp tutorial

For this photo on photoshop i used the sponge tool to take out the colour of the skin to make her look more dead with gray skin. Then i used the burn tool to darken the colour of her lips and around her eyes to define them. Next I used the magnetic lasso tool to select her teeth then i used the warp tool to change the shape of the tooth so that they are more sharp like fangs and then selected the eyes and the hue/saturation tool to change the colour of her eyes.

Wrinkles and Spots

These photos are examples of using the heal brush on photoshop to edit the original photo by selecting an area of skin that doesn't have a spot by pressing Alt + right click then go over the area with spots and it will clone the selected area of skin also depending on how big the spot is you will have to change the size of the brush to cover more of an area. The first photo is an example of how the heal tool can be used to remove spots and take away some of the redness of the cheeks. The second photo show how to you can use the heal brush to remove wrinkles and make someone much younger. I also used some of the adjustment tools to improve both of the images such as the hue/saturation tool to remove more of the redness, levels and brightness/contrast to make the image lighter and the magnetic lasso tool to select the eyes and the hue/saturation tool again to change the colour.

front cover

For the photo I used auto focus and I leaned that it's easier to use auto because for manual you have to manually adjust the lens to get the focus right for the camera where as for automatic you have to half press the button and wait for it to adjust then press the button. Using portrait is better than landscape for a magazine cover because it captures more of the person in the foreground and not a lot of the background so that the person is whats centred on the magazine cover. Most of the images taken where in focus what could have improved the quality of the image was if we had used a tripod to steady the camera instead of it being hand held also maybe using manual focus as well.

For photoshop I used layers, shapes, transforming and text tools and i didn't think it was hard to use because I have already used them tools before at home and in AS graphics.I would say that the text is controlled with the help of the margins so they are all lined up. I used black, white, red and yellow to stand out from the brick backround and seperate diffrent sections.
